Epilepsy12 combined organisational and clinical audits
Epilepsy12 (delivered by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health) has published a report about the first year of care for children and young people (CYP) following a first paediatric assessment. Based on assessments in England and Wales between 1 December 2022 and 30 November 2023, it includes findings spanning mental health and care planning as well as the appropriateness of assessments and the professionals involved.
There have been significant increases in data completeness…this improves the ability to have confidence when drawing conclusions
Examples of improvements include increases in the percentage of CYP:
- Who met the Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service (CESS) criteria having evidence of a referral
- With convulsive seizures having an ECG within the first year of care
- With mental health needs having evidence of support within the first year of care
- Having evidence of a care planning agreement within the first year of care.
However, the report also found that there was room for improvement relating to a number of areas. As such, it includes five key recommendations for improvement relating to:
- Health Boards and Trusts identified as non-participation outliers
- The appropriate allocation of time for epilepsy specific audit participation, quality improvement and service leadership
- Strengthening community and neighbourhood provision
- Improving timely and equitable access to tertiary and epilepsy surgery services
- Supporting improvements in mental health provision.
