Reports, recommendations and infographics

We publish dozens of clinical audit and outcome reports every year and each report contains multiple recommendations for improvement. To help NHS Trust Boards and commissioning organisations to maintain oversight of those reports for all areas of service delivery, we’ve created a single point of reference for those recommendations. Further information is available here.

NCAPOP 9 month publication schedule

This Excel document is a regularly updated nine-month publication schedule for the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP) – covering the National Clinical Audit Programme and also the Clinical Outcome Review Programmes.  Further information is available here.

Programme summaries

HQIP commissioned projects have been summarised and grouped into categories based on location of care and clinical subject area. Each summary is intended to provide a brief overview of the remit of each project, information on data available (other than that found in reports) and a summary of quality improvement resources. View the programme summaries here.

Impact report

Every project within the NCAPOP has been established to address a clinical area (or areas) where healthcare improvement is required, and the common aim of each project is to have a positive impact on patient care. This compendium provides a summary of some of the key impacts the projects have had. Impact has been categorised into four categories: national; system; local and public. Further information is available here.

Quality improvement in the national clinical audit programme

This page provides information and resources to support the use of the national clinical audit and patient outcome programme (NCAPOP) to stimulate healthcare quality improvement. Further information is available here.

Quality improvement in social care

Excellent practice already exists in many social care settings, confirming the sectors’ on-going commitment to quality. However, as yet there is no systematic and sector-wide approach to quality improvement. Quality Cycles, used in comparable settings such as healthcare, where they are known as clinical audit, offer the potential to provide such a sector-wide approach. Following a series of consultations and a pilot programme carried out in dementia care homes HQIP produced a suite of care audit guides, which set out this approach in three comprehensive but practical documents. Further information is available here.

NICE and National clinical audits

The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), with their Impact Reports, review how NICE guidance is used to improve the health and care of people and they base these reports on data from national clinical audits, as well as other sources. Further information is available here.

Quality Accounts

A Quality Account is a written report, which providers of NHS services are required to publish on the NHS England website each year, summarising the quality of their services during the previous financial year. Publication fulfils providers obligation to submit the report to the Secretary of State. One of the elements included in the Quality Account relates to clinical audit. Further information is available here.

The Directory

HQIP maintains the National Clinical Audit and Enquiries Directory to provide information on the National Clinical Audits and Enquiries that are in existence. The Directory is a useful tool in assisting healthcare providers with planning their audit activity each year. Further information is available here.

NCAPOP subscription funding

The NHS Standard Contract requires relevant providers of NHS services to participate in the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP). NHS Trusts are responsible for funding a proportion of the NCAPOP costs through a process known as Subscription Funding. Further information is available here.
