Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Report 2025 (NNHLA/NATCAN)
The National Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Audit (NNHLA), part of the National Cancer Audit Collaborating Centre (NATCAN), has published a report on care received by people diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in 2022 in England, and in 2023 in Wales. It found that the percentage of people who survived at one year was 81% (England) and 83% (Wales), and at two years was 74% in England (data not available for Wales). However, the variation in 1-year and 2-year survival outcomes between different NHS Trusts and health boards – which reflects inequity in care – is highlighted as a case for urgent targeted quality improvement.
The percentage of people who survived at one year was 81% (England) and 83% (Wales)
Variation in data quality is also raised as an issue, and the report recommends that there should be a designated coordinator or clinician at each NHS Trust/health board to improve the completeness and quality of data items recorded in the national cancer datasets (with particular focus on staging in England and Wales, and treatment delivery in Wales).
A further four clinical recommendations to support improvement are also included:
- Reduce the current rate of emergency presentations of NHL by reviewing diagnostic pathways into and within secondary care, and examine variation in rates of emergency presentation
- Local review is needed to identify diagnostic and treatment pathway delays and reduce inter-provider variation in people with high-grade NHL starting Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) within 62 days of referral
- Identify patient and hospital factors contributing to delays in starting radiotherapy after last administered dose of SACT, and explore strategies to reduce inter-provider variation
- Identify reasons why individuals with NHL are not enrolled in clinical trials.
