Primary Breast Cancer Report 2025 (NAoPri/NATCAN)
The National Audit of Primary Breast Cancer (NAoPri), part of the National Cancer Audit Collaborating Centre (NATCAN), has published a report on care received by people diagnosed with primary breast cancer between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2022 in England and Wales. It found that, among those diagnosed with primary breast cancer (Stage 1 to 3A), three-year all-cause survival was 92%, while three-year breast cancer-specific survival was 97%.
Among those diagnosed with primary breast cancer (Stage 1 to 3A), three-year all-cause survival was 92%
The report also found that 51% of non-screen-detected cases in Wales, and estimated that 68% in England, underwent Triple Diagnostic Assessment (TDA) – where clinical assessment, imaging and biopsy takes place during a single visit leading to diagnosis. TDA has many benefits, however the available information demonstrates that many breast units are not providing TDA to all newly referred people. As such, this report recommends that people with breast cancer have access to TDA in a single visit and, if required, identify methods to increase the provision of this service.
Other key findings relate to surgery, NeoAdjuvant Chemotherapy (NACT), immediate breast reconstruction, re-operation, and contact with a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). Further recommendations are:
- To improve data completeness and quality
- To review the use of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy for people with triple negative and HER2+ early invasive breast cancer
- To review rates of immediate breast reconstruction
- To review rates of re-operation following breast conserving surgery (BCS).
