This report is the fifth report of NELA and covers the care received by NHS patients in England and Wales who underwent an emergency laparotomy between 1 December 2017 and 30 November 2018 in 179 hospitals across England and Wales.

The report examines the findings through each stage of the emergency laparotomy patient’s perioperative journey and contains recommendations for improving the quality of the care process at each stage from preoperative to postoperative outcomes.
