Behind every statistic is a person whose life, and the lives of those who love them, is profoundly affected by the care they receive. Only by involving patients in all aspects of measuring and delivering care, can we ensure that services truly meet the needs of those who use them. This leads to efficiencies as well as patient satisfaction. Or, as HQIP patient representative, Sadia, puts it: “involving patients early can prevent problems later on, and save time and effort for all involved.”
This is a plan to…entirely reimagine how the NHS does care so patients have real choice and control over their health and care” NHS 10 Year Health Plan for England
Patient engagement is an essential component of healthcare improvement. It ensures that services are designed with the people who use them, with their voices being at the heart of decision-making. Not only does it enhance healthcare improvement by prioritising what matters to patients, it helps to tackle health inequalities and ensures transparency and inclusivity. Patient involvement is better for staff too; working towards the same goal boosts morale and supports learning.
