HQIP launches specification for new national sepsis audit

A new National Infection and Sepsis Audit in Acute Care will benchmark care, identify variation and support improvements for children and adults in acute NHS settings.

HQIP has launched the specification for a new national clinical audit focused on severe infection and sepsis in acute care. The National Infection and Sepsis Audit in Acute Care (NISA-Acute) will provide benchmarked data to help identify variation in care and drive improvement over time.

The audit will initially focus on the early stages of care, including recognition, escalation, investigation and treatment during approximately the first 72 hours. It will cover children and adults receiving NHS-funded care in acute hospital settings in England and Wales. Its development will align with NHS England’s Sepsis Modern Service Framework, the National Patient Safety Plan for NHS Wales and the UK Antimicrobial Resistance National Action Plan.

Once established, NISA-Acute is expected to provide regularly updated, publicly accessible performance results and an annual state-of-the-nation report. Patients, carers and the public will be involved throughout the audit’s design and delivery to help ensure its outputs support better care and outcomes.
