Young people with Type 2 Diabetes, 2019-2020

The National Diabetes Audit (NDA) and the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA), which provide a comprehensive view of diabetes care in England and Wales, have published their first Young People with Type 2 Diabetes report. Based on data collected from England between January 2019 and March 2020, this report aims to document the number of young people with Type 2 diabetes up to the age of 40, their characteristics and the diabetes care they receive. Overall, there are 122,780 children and young adults under the age of 40 with Type 2 diabetes. Compared with people aged 40 and over, young people with Type 2 diabetes are more likely to be:

• Female
• Of minority ethnicity
• Living in an area of social deprivation
• Classified as overweight or obese

The report also covers the care young people received. This data is particularly important because adverse diabetes and cardiovascular outcomes are more common in people who develop diabetes at an early age and it is thought that the numbers are increasing.
