The National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA) has published a report on the care provided to children and young people (CYP) with Type 2 diabetes by paediatric diabetes units (PDUs) in England and Wales between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024.
41% of CYP with Type 2 diabetes, aged 12 or older, had all six key health checks in 2023/24
The report found that the incidence and prevalence of diabetes has increased substantially since 2019/20, with the number of CYP with Type 2 diabetes receiving care from a PDU having increased by 88%, from 810 in 2019/20 to 1,521 in 2023/24. Other key messages relating to CYP with Type 2 diabetes include:
- More likely to come from ethnic minority backgrounds or live in more deprived areas
- 41% (aged 12 or older) had all six key health checks, and 24% received psychological support, in 2023/24.
This report also includes the following recommendations for improvement:
- Teams should be formally trained in the management of CYP with Type 2 diabetes
- CYP with identified comorbidities should be offered treatment and specialist support in line with NICE guidance
- CYP with Type 2 diabetes and a BMI in the obese range should be offered holistic support
- A standard, specialised package of care should be available within all PDUs for CYP with Type 2 diabetes
- Careful consideration should be given to the potential for intervention and early escalation for treatment for comorbidities.
