The National Joint Registry

Described as a “global exemplar of an implantable medical device registry” by Baroness Cumberlege, the National Joint Registry (NJR) – which is hosted by HQIP – is the largest national orthopaedic registry in the world. Operational in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, it collects information on hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint replacement surgery.

Supporting improvement

The mission of the National Joint Registry is to collect and analyse high quality and relevant data about joint replacement surgery in order to provide timely warnings of issues related to patient safety. In a continuous drive to enhance patient safety and improve outcomes, it monitors, analyses and reports on the performance of the surgical procedures, the hospitals where they were performed, and the surgeons who performed them: alongside facilitating a supported research programme to further joint surgery understanding and improvement, for patient benefit.
