Respiratory care – State of the Nation 2026 report

This report is a longitudinal overview of respiratory care across England and Wales, using data from people admitted to hospital with COPD and asthma (adults and children and young people), and people assessed for pulmonary rehabilitation between April 2021 and March 2025.

Encouraging trends are emerging within COPD, children and young people’s asthma, and pulmonary rehabilitation, particularly for measures reflecting delivery of fundamental care such as safe oxygen prescribing, access to tobacco dependence support, personalised asthma action plans, and practice walk testing. In contrast, adult asthma Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) have remained largely static over time, despite evidence that early treatment and discharge bundles improve outcomes and reduce readmissions.

This report can be used by service providers, commissioners and clinical teams to identify areas of good practice as well as those requiring further improvement, supporting targeted quality improvement activity. The findings highlight the ongoing importance of improving care in the first hours of admission, increasing uptake of discharge bundles, strengthening workforce capacity – particularly specialist nursing – and ensuring high levels of service participation and case ascertainment so that data accurately reflect care delivery and can be used to drive meaningful change.
