The National Respiratory Audit Programme (NRAP) has published a report which presents information on the 30- and 90-day outcomes of children, young people and adults who were admitted to hospital in England and Wales for asthma or COPD between April 2021 and March 2023.
The most common reason for readmission remains an acute exacerbation of asthma or COPD – the same condition that led to the initial hospital admission
This report can be used by service providers, commissioners and clinical teams to identify areas of success or those requiring improvement to facilitate and influence change. It contains key findings in relation to mortality, highlighting data on the top three reasons for mortality for adults admitted to hospital with both asthma and COPD. Given the timeframe of data collection, the report found that COVID-19 replaced chronic ischaemic heart disease as the third most common cause of death in those with COPD, despite mortality rates for chronic ischaemic heart disease remaining stable.
It also contains key findings in relation to readmissions. As with mortality, reflecting the timeframe of data collection, adults discharged from hospital with COPD showed that COVID-19 was the third most common reason for readmission compared to the 2018–20 report.
