The National Audit of Breast Cancer in Older Patients, which aims to evaluate the process of care and outcomes for women diagnosed with breast cancer in NHS hospitals within England and Wales, specifically older women, has published its annual report for 2021.
Based on data from women aged 50+ years diagnosed with breast cancer between January 2019 and 31 July 2020, this report reviews diagnoses and treatment patterns across England and Wales, taking the early months of the pandemic into consideration. Outcomes among women diagnosed between January 2014 and December 2018 were also examined within the report.
Overall, there was a 49% reduction in the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer between 1 April and 31 July 2020 in comparison to the same period in 2019 and 90% fewer women were diagnosed via screening which reflects local and national pausing of screening services due to Covid-19. The National Audit of Breast Cancer in Older Patients was established in April 2016 to evaluate the process of care and outcomes for older women aged, diagnosed with breast cancer and treated in NHS hospitals within England and Wales. Breast cancer is the most common female cancer in the UK. Over 50,000 women have a new diagnosis of breast cancer each year in England and Wales.
