Dr Thomas Salisbury

Clinical Lead for AI and Data Science

Dr Salisbury is an ophthalmology registrar and clinical informatician. His role helps HQIP strengthen its thinking and delivery across AI, clinical data science, digital audit and the future use of data within national clinical audit and registries. Tom is particularly focused on how responsible AI, EPR data and interoperability can support better, more timely and more useful audit and registry outputs, while keeping clinical safety, patient benefit and practical implementation firmly at the centre of the work.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, Thomas first trained as an optometrist before medicine and brings a practical, patient-centred approach to digital change. During his ophthalmology training, he has led the Royal College of Ophthalmologists ePortfolio re-design for their new curriculum and has supported deployment of digital systems across multiple hospital services and the North East and North Cumbria ICS. He holds a PGCert in Clinical Data Science and has completed a Topol Digital Fellowship. His research has focused on digital assessment of falls risk in people with visual impairment, alongside publications on AI, imaging and data diversity.
