"The book serves primarily as a handbook on how to carry out clinical audit, whether you are a clinician, audit specialist, member of a team or individual. It sets out the basics and necessities of audit practice, framed within contextual material about key issues in audit," commented Burgess.

"The new volume updates the context within which audit takes place and brings audit practice up to date. This includes greater emphasis on measuring outcomes, and involving patients. It brings together in one handy form key guidance from HQIP on boards, patients and criteria, along with a review of the effectiveness of audit, and discussion of the ethical issues in audit. It is framed by a review of issues in clinical audit so readers can understand how audit fits in with wider processes and issues in healthcare.

Other contributors to the updated book include Nancy Dixon (Healthcare Quality Quest), Christopher Loughlan (Cambridge Institute of Research), John Bullivant (Good Governance Institute) and the Clinical Audit Support Centre.

The new edition is also seen as a much more global edition, focusing on the basic principles and methods of clinical audit and its applicability worldwide, rather than solely aimed at an NHS audience.
