NHS Future Forum highlights crucial role for clinical audit

The NHS Future Forum published this month (10 January) its second set of reports to Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.  As part of the series of recommendations, the role of clinical audit is highlighted as a crucial part of any effective information system and patient-centred healthcare system.

Highlights from the reports include:

Page 35 of the Integration paper states:

"The Department of Health and, in future, the NHS Commissioning Board should commission new national clinical audits that span whole journeys of care for key patients groups such as frail older people. As well as measuring outcomes relating to effectiveness and safety of care, these should also measure the patient reported experience of care."

HQIP submitted a paper on 'How can information be better used in the NHS?' to the Forum last year.
