What is a national clinical audit? Achieving high quality national clinical audit

National Clinical Audit & Registries

National Clinical Audit & Registries

National clinical audit is designed to improve patient outcomes across a wide range of medical, surgical and mental health conditions. Its purpose is to engage all healthcare professionals across England and Wales in systematic evaluation of their clinical practice against standards and to support and encourage improvement and deliver better outcomes in the quality of treatment and care.

HQIP supports national audits in the following ways:
  • We procure and contract manage the group of national audits in England, known as NCAPOP, funded by the Department of Health; some of which also cover Scotland and Wales with separate funding from Quality Improvement Scotland and the Welsh Assembly Government. NCAAG, the Departmental Advisory Group works with us in the procurement process.
  • We offer support and advice to prospective new national clinical audit teams, helping to advise them how they can develop their ideas and create fully functioning national audits in the future. Our multi-site funding can contribute to this process.
  • We offer guidance, advice and support on common interests and issues in audit through written briefings, conferences and seminars, and through facilitating networking, including via our dedictated online platform, the National Clinical Audit Forum (NCAF).

*UPDATE - 2 November 2011: HQIP announces four point plan to support national and local clinical audit>>

NCAPOP

HQIP hosts the contract to manage and develop the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP). The programme comprises more than 30 clinical audits that cover care provided to people with a wide range of medical, surgical and mental health conditions and will be extended to other areas of healthcare that are considered a priority by the Department of Health.

Funding for new national clinical audits

Periodically HQIP invites proposals for new topics for national audits. A round in 2011 led to 11 new topic areas being identified which will be commissioned over the next two years. This means that at the present time there is no funding available for new national clinical audit topics to be funded. When more funding is available it will be announced here. The commissioning process for the topics already decided will roll out over the period 2011-13.

For all information about the specific aspects of our funding and support for national audit and registry practice, please use the sub-pages within this section listed to the left. Use the + buttons to expand each sub-area further.
