HQIP seeks Senior Clinical Registry Statistician
Vacancy: Senior Clinical Registry Statistician
Hours: negotiable/consultancy or secondment possible (see below)
Salary: up to £47000 pro rata to full time, or equivalent
HQIP, the commissioning body for clinical registers, databases and clinical audits in the UK, is looking to obtain the skills of an experienced methodologist in supporting projects of this type.
Based in HQIP's national audit team, you will provide advice to new and existing registers and support our review and contract management services for registers we fund.
Clinical databases and audits often have no lack of interested clinicians, nor those from administrative and patient interests. However they sometimes lack access to methodologists with advanced technical skills, to ensure their data is complete, accurate, reliable and credible. Whilst not working on any specific audit projects on an extended basis, you will advise those developing new registers, support existing teams to get their methodology right, and appraise proposals for new projects. You will also write guidance for providers.
You will have had experience in designing and running clinical databases, ideally clinical audits. You will be able to use your practical experience and knowledge to influence and help others. The role will give you the opportunity to broaden your skills and knowledge and take an advisory rather than a hands on provider role with a wide variety of projects, enabling you to influence a wide range of practice and improve the filed as a whole, rather than simply a single or linked group of projects.
Specific tasks:
- To be the lead for methodology within HQIP and to support HQIP's commissioning and contract management of registers/databases with expert knowledge
- To give general advice to teams developing new databases of what they need to do to build a functioning project
- To review existing database projects' methodology and to give advice and suggestions
- To review the methodological elements of bids proposed for funding and give recommendations as to their likely effectiveness and appropriateness
- To research and identify good practice in databases
- To produce written guidance on methodological aspects of registers/audits
Skills and experience needed:
You will be a senior medical statistician with experience and skills in managing and improving large clinical datasets, ideally in the NHS or in research rather than in the private sector. You will have these skills and experience in some depth:
- Statistical analysis of large clinical datasets
- Data quality issues and how this can be improved
- A research or audit background
- Understanding of IT issues
- Knowledge of Information governance
- Project management skills
- Skills in writing
Likely qualifications:
Minimum: Degree or equivalent significant experience in Statistics, Biostatistics, Clinical Research, Computer Science, Project Management or related field; or BS/BA degree with 4 years experience; or, ideally an MSc degree (such as medical statistics) with 3 years experience within a clinical data management setting.
Options for providing this service:
This role can be delivered in various ways. You may wish to apply to do this on a full time basis, as a permanent employee of HQIP (until 31 March 2013 in the first instance), but part time is also available from three days a week upwards and flexible working is a possibility.
Alternatively you may wish to offer the equivalent time on a secondment or consultancy basis. You may wish to carry on working in an academic setting, but provide the same amount of time to HQIP by consultancy or secondment with arrangement from your employer.
Application:
- To apply complete HQIP's standard application form (doc) >>
- and the HQIP Equal Opportunities Form (doc) >>
- These should be supplemented with a statement of why you feel you have the appropriate skills for this post, to a maximum length of 1,000 words.
- Email all three items to sharon.lukom@hqip.org.uk
