Falls and bone health in older people national audit
Description:
In 2001 the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) set out a model for service provision for falls and bone health. The NSF required all local health and social services to have an integrated falls service in place by April 2005.
The national falls and bone health in older people audits commenced in 2005 with an organisational audit which assessed how far NHS trusts were with implementing services outlined in the NSF. In 2007 there followed a clinical audit (a patient case note audit) which looked at the delivery of care for patients who had fallen and suffered a fragility fracture (20 hip fractures and 40 non-hip fractures). Linked to these pieces of work was a patient and public involvement project which asked older people about their experiences of their falls services.
Standards for the audits were derived from:
- National Service Framework for Older People, Chapter 6 “Falls”, Department of Health, London, HMSO (2001) (NSF for Older People)
- National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, Clinical Guideline (CG) 21, Falls: the assessment and prevention of falls in older people. November 2004
- National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, Technology Appraisal (TA) 87, Bisphosphonates (alendronate, etidonate, risedronate), selective oestrogen receptor modulators (raloxifene) and parathyroid hormone (teriparatide) for the secondary prevention of osteoporotic fragility fractures in post menopausal women. January 2005
