Clinical Audit Awards 2009 - winners announced

6 May 2009: The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership is pleased to announce the winners of their 2009 Clinical Audit Awards.

The judges, including representatives from the Royal College of Physicians, Royal College of Nursing and National Audit Governance Group, had a challenging task and commented on the overall scope and quality of the entries. In particular they were pleased to see many innovative and exciting entries from a range of Trusts, which bodes well for the future.

The awards, which were designed to celebrate achievement in clinical audit, attracted entries from around the country and were presented on the evening of 29th April 2009 at HQIP's Working Together in Clinical Audit Conference.

The winner in the Sustained Improvement category, which was presented by Dr Paul Lelliott, Chairman of HQIP, was Hampshire Partnership NHS Trust for their Audit to increase the incidence of appropriate and timely recording of outcome measures for young people at Leigh House Hospital. This entry particularly stood out as it was a psychiatric audit carried out with a group of very challenged young people.

The runners up in this category were Hampshire Partnership NHS Trust for their Audit to ensure the appropriate use of seclusion in the Department of Psychiatry, Southampton and Northampton General Hospital for their audit on the use of appropriate size laryngeal mask airways.

The Patient Involvement category was won by Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust for their audit of Child Derived Standards of Paediatric Pain Management by their Peers. This entry was presented by Julie Royce, Associate Director of NICE and stood out as it was a rare and successful example of involving young patients with challenging conditions in audit. This demonstrated the skill and dedication of the audit and clinician group.

The runners up in this category were Hampshire Partnership NHS Trust for their patient privacy and dignity audit and Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust for their patient survey of services offered by the Breast Cancer Team.

The final award, Clinical Audit Programme of the Year, was won by Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust for their 2008-9 programme. The award was presented by Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, Medical Director of the NHS, and was awarded as not only did they have a comprehensive programme with targets, they were able to cite a high level of performance improvements in re-audits.

The runners up in this category were Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.

Robin Burgess, Chief Executive of HQIP, commented: "HQIP was established in April 2008 to promote quality in healthcare, and in particular to increase the impact that clinical audit has on healthcare quality in England

The Clinical Audit Awards aim to highlight examples of excellence and innovation within clinical audit and we are delighted that they attracted such an excellent range of high quality entries from so many Trusts.

We have worthy winners and have seen many other excellent projects which were serious contenders. There is an increasing awareness of the importance of clinical audit within quality improvement and HQIP is pleased to be able to play its part in promoting this through the Awards and its other activities."
